Project overview

The project consists of editing a video using online archival footage and reworking it frame by frame at 8 frames per second. Entirely developed through the rotoscoping technique, the video explores the theme of cinema by focusing on what happens inside a movie theater rather than on the film itself.

The concept

Adopting an ironic and light-hearted approach, the project portrays people's reactions inside a cinema, from the moment they enter the theater to the end of the screening. The work shifts attention from the cinematic narrative to the collective experience of watching a film, highlighting the audience's emotional responses.

Design approach

The creative process unfolded in several stages. An original video edit was first created to define the narrative and visual structure of the project. Each frame was then traced and redrawn by hand, resulting in a total of 540 drawings. Oil pastels and pen nibs were used to create rich, material textures. After scanning, a color inversion effect was applied to selected scenes to evoke the immersive atmosphere of a dark cinema, illuminated only by the light of the screen.

Deliverables

Single-channel rotoscoped video composed of hand-drawn, scanned, and edited frames assembled into a final video work.
