Project overview

Oltre Mare originates from the analysis of Goal 14 of the UN 2030 Agenda, Life Below Water, with the aim of understanding its values, challenges, and the actors involved in the protection of marine ecosystems. The project explores how to engage people with the theme of the sea in a way that is accessible and engaging rather than didactic. Through contextual research and the analysis of relevant case studies, a clear design direction emerged: using myth and legend as tools for awareness. The imagery of aquatic mythological figures becomes the narrative thread that fosters an emotional and cultural connection with the marine world, engaging audiences of all ages.

The concept

The project is developed as a system composed of three interconnected outputs: a board game, a magazine, and a website that presents and expands the initiative. An imagined collaboration with National Geographic supports the storytelling of the Italian sea through different but coherent languages, combining education, entertainment, and cultural dissemination.

Design approach

The project is grounded in extensive research on myths and legends related to water across Italian regions. Illustration becomes the shared visual language of all outputs, shaping a narrative space where myths, traditions, and regional identities intersect. The magazine, designed to be accessible also to younger audiences, tells the story of each region through images and narratives, while the website acts as a connective platform that extends and deepens the project's content.

Deliverables

The project includes the complete design of a board game, from the game board and cards to the box and instructions. In parallel, the first issue of a hypothetical editorial series was developed, along with the main interfaces of the website, conceived as a digital extension of the Oltre Mare narrative system.
